Therapy That Empowers

Trauma

There are things that you are weirdly afraid of doing. You know this fear makes no logical sense. When you drive on freeways or assert your needs there is avoidance, a lot of anxious anticipation, and tolerating these activities with a great sense of discomfort and anxiety. There is little awareness of the events in the past that have shaped this response in you.

Trauma constricts our lives in order to “keep us safe”. We often develop beliefs about ourselves or the world during traumatic events that are designed to make sure we tow these lines. These beliefs often sound like “I am not safe,” “I am not a good person,” “I have no control over what happens,” “I am responsible for everything and everyone.”  These beliefs is what continues to haunt us long after the traumatic event has passed.

An unprocessed trauma is much like an undigested piece of food. There is a sense that a traumatic event is still happening in the present even if it has happened years ago. It bothers our system until it is allowed to be integrated and put into its proper place into the past. I am currently in the process of earning my EMDR Certification and use EMDR in my work. EMDR therapy has promising research supported outcomes for resolving traumatic events, in a way that is gentle and takes less time than traditional therapy. In addition to EMDR, I offer Flash Technique which is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention similar to EMDR. Flash Technique can be easier for those with many very severe traumas to experience and was developed for that reason. Visit https://flashtechnique.com/wp/ for more information on Flash Technique.
